It's Been a Fun 33 Years....

A Marriage

August 5, 1978
By Michael Blumenthal

You are holding up a ceiling
with both arms. It is very heavy,
but you must hold it up, or else
it will fall down on you. Your arms
are tired, terribly tired,
and, as the day goes on, it feels
as if either your arms or the ceiling
will soon collapse.

But then,
something wonderful happens:
a man or a woman,
walks into the room
and holds their arms up
to the ceiling beside you.

So you finally get
to take down your arms.
You feel the relief of respite,
the blood flowing back
to your fingers and arms.
And when your partner’s arms tire,
you hold up your own
to relieve him again.

And it can go on like this
for many years
without the house falling.

Thanks Joe for holding up the ceiling with me for the last 33 years!

My heavens but we were young!

Maybe part of the key to a long marriage is leaving the reception clutching bottles of champagne!

  1. What a wonderful tribute to your marriage. Great photos!

  2. Such a good looking couple. I bet they made some good looking children.. I'm sorry I am so bad with dates - I did not remember that it was your anniversary. I will call tomorrow. Love y'all - Clark.

  3. Happy Anniversary, Grace & Joe!
We also have an anniversary later this month on the 21st. The poem was beautiful and very fitting.

  4. Awwww, love the metaphor. I've held up a bit of drywalled ceiling myself... well, the two of us as we remodeled a home. It's HEAVY and marriage can be as well, but with a joint effort things hold together, don't they?

Happy Anniversary to the two of you!

  5. how absolutely wonderful! congratulations to you and your hubby. loved the ceiling metaphor. loved it. :) God bless you both!

  6. Congratulations and may you have at least 33 more!

When you have a moment, please stop by, I love company and new friends are always welcome.

  8. Happy Anniversary my dear friend, if anyone tells you that 33 years of marriage is a piece of cake, they are fibbing, it takes so much on both ends, you are both blessed to have so many memories, beautiful young men (now)and many friends who have loved you through your journey. Now I will be around for the next 20. Love you both.
